16 Week Prep & Base Phase Training Program Offered NOW!

Do you need some motivation to get you started for next season? I have created a 16 WEEK PREP and BASE PHASE training program to help you lay the foundation for your triathlon race season. The program is designed for you that I believe, and others who have used it, help you achieve triathlon success. This program can be used by triathletes of all abilities and who compete in short or long distance triathlons. The program only costs $5 per week ($80 total). You can purchase the program and other programs at www.trainingbible.com/whp. A % of sales goes to the Active Awareness Charity Fund.

"Wes' triathlon training programs helped motivate me to get out the door. Every workout had a purpose and I felt like I didn't have to second guess if my training was going in the right direction. The program is inexpensive and effective.

Thanks Wes for offering these training programs."
Gerald from Texas.

10 Tips You Should Be Doing Now:

The majority of my readers are from the Northern Hemisphere. Here some tips for you to be a better triathlete in 2004.

  1. Be patient. Work on your base building (endurance). Hold off on the intensity.
  2. Improve your swim form. Get a video camera and videotape yourself at least above water. Look at it with a person who is knowledgeable with freestyle. Get rid of your old habits before you start a new season of swimming.
  3. Find the "dead spot" on the bike through isolated leg training. Your goal is to get the upstroke of the pedal stroke out of the way so the down stroke can move you forward.
  4. Develop strength on the bike and run by training in the hills. You don't have to run them hard to build force. If indoor, run on a treadmill at a % grade. Bike on your indoor trainer with your front wheel raised six inches.
  5. Get your body used to a cadence that is right for you on both the bike and run. This is typically between 85-95 reps per minute.
  6. Develop a monthly and weekly training plan. This will help motivate you.
  7. Register for your race. This seems ludicrous, but with the growing popularity of triathlon, many of the big name races are filling up fast.
  8. Set three goals for the 2004 season. Put them on your bathroom mirror and somewhere on or in a computer file.
  9. Go to a Wes Hobson Performance Camp. Learn from the best athletes in the world so you are less likely to second guess yourself.
  10. Enjoy the journey! You aren't making money in the sport of triathlon so are you doing it? Don't be too serious, have fun!

Simon Lessing Is Available To Coach Triathletes:

Simon Lessing, 5-time world champion of both the Long Course World Championships and the Olympic Distance World Championships, has joined WHP as a triathlon coach! Simon is only coaching a limited number of athletes as he prepares for the 2004 Hawaii Ironman. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. To find out more about the coaching offers Simon is offering click here. There are also several other associate coaches to chose from at this link.

The Isolated Leg Training Advantage:

As we ramp up for a new season of training, isolated leg training (ILT) should be a primary focus for cyclists and triathletes. The purpose of ILT is to create a smooth pedal stroke to become more efficient. I have people do ILT so the athlete develops efficient up stroke when pedaling. The latest research shows that the upstroke of the pedal provides no specific power towards locomotion of going forward. The real reason of a good upstroke is to get that leg out of the way so that the downward pedal stroke of the other foot can use its force (power) to go forward. An efficient upstroke doesn't make the other leg have to aid in pushing the other leg up. In other words, the upstroke leg's goal is to get out of the way for the downstroke leg. This is a misconception for many as it is thought that the upstroke provides power. A good ILT specific workout is to do 5 X 1:00 each leg with 1:00 of both legs easy spinning in between switching legs for a total of 20 minutes.

Vitamin C Keeps The Stomach Smiling

Do you know that ascorbic acid can help prevent stomach problems, including peptic ulcers and stomach cancer? OK, OK, first things first: Do you know what ascorbic acid is? It's vitamin C!

Chronic infection with a specific strain of the Heliobacter Pylori bacteria has been linked to the above mentioned gastric problems, but a study that appeared in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition suggests that vitamin C can reduce the risk of infection. In Caucasian men and women, levels of ascorbic acid in the bloodstream were inversely related to the risk of infection with H. Pylori: the more vitamin C in the blood, the less risk of being infected. This association was not significant for men and women of other races.

So, now that you know what ascorbic acid is, and that it can prevent gastrointestinal problems, here's the final question: Where do you find vitamin C? Well, good sources include citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemons, mangos, etc.), asparagus, broccoli, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and cabbage.
