* If My Sis Can Do a Triathlon…..

My sister, Lisa, recently competed in and finished her first triathlon, the New York Metro Danskin. The race filled to the 1,000 participants and its distances were swim .5 mile, bike 13 miles and run 3.1 miles. At the age of 43, she finished in 1:41.

Her preparation involved four months of training at an average of three hours of training a week. She comes from a swimming/diving background, yet the most shocking part of the whole race was the mass swim start where arms were flailing and legs kicking. She was forewarned about this at the pre-race meetings, but thought nothing of it do to her comfort of being in the water. Although thinking she was prepared, the swim was the most difficult. One quick hint is to visualize the swim start, accept that you might get hit AND even unintentionally dunked. Also, practicing open swim starts will help, such as five people in a pool racing to the other end within the confines of one lane. Lisa's other realization at the race came on the bike. There is a difference between biking with the wind and into the wind J Congrats sis.

* Training Plans only $5 per week:

Wes has just revised the ten training programs he offers. Now is a great time to start with the 16 Week Prep and Base Phase program.

"Wes, another successful season in the books thanks to your Tri training plans. First time in 6 years of racing - 4 x 30-34 age group podiums (out of 5 races) and 4 minutes subtracted from my PR on 1/3 less training . . . KUDOS to your system!" Jim

* "THE" ANSWER IS HERE: (by Bruce Gottlieb)

there and everywhere. After all, we are all looking for "THE" definitive answer, the one key ingredient, the magic pill, and the silver bullet. Lets face it, in terms of physical talent, we gots what we gots. Hopefully you are smart enough to nurture it to maximize "its" performance to peak ability. Next we combine technical skills. We read our books and follow the sound advice of our coaches. Well, if all athletes are doing this why do some athletes perform a notch above? They have found "the" answer, and they did this because they knew where to look. I will give you a clue; the answer is not outside yourself.

Maximize Your Mental Capacities For Peak Performance. Learn to train your mind. Teach your athletes to focus on microcosms of various techniques. This can become the single most effective mental tool during a race. The pain builds, the obstacle presents itself, the negative thoughts begin to enter, whatever the "detractor" is, we need a tool to defeat it. If we focus on the detracting factor, then "it" has our attention. Negative thoughts and problems can pick up a head of steam quicker than a freight train, and these types of thoughts always lead to defeat. This is because our unconscious process that leads us to failure is based in following the path of least resistance. Are you strong enough to strive for success and overpower this natural self-destructive pattern to reach your goal? Of course you are going to answer this question with "yes I am," but I will contend that unless you practice techniques to overpower that self-destructive tendency then you will not be successful. If we can refocus on something more positive then it will be the positive thought that will have our attention. What better place to put your focus then in what you are doing at the moment. "Be in the moment" is not just a saying that comes from The Peoples Republic of Boulder. It is a thought that has extreme value, and power. Doing what you are doing will always keep you in the moment, and it will encourage conscious intent in the action.

* Fishing for a Solution to Exercise-Induced Asthma (Dr. Roc Byrd)

Proper breathing is a vital component of effective exercise, whether you're running, swimming or lifting weights. Breathe in, breathe out; inhale on the way up, exhale on the way down. Sounds easy, right? Not if you suffer from exercise-induced asthma. It's been estimated that nine out of 10 chronic asthma sufferers, and four of 10 individuals with allergic rhinitis or atopic dermatitis, will feel the effects of exercise-induced asthma. Symptoms can include chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

There is hope for sufferers of this condition, however: Researchers at the University of Indiana have found that fish oil may reduce the severity of exercise-induced asthma in athletes. Subjects who consumed fish oil capsules daily for three weeks (approximately 5.4 grams of fish oil per day) showed improved post-exercise pulmonary function and reduced symptoms of exercise-induced asthma compared to control subjects who received no fish oil supplementation.

Good dietary sources of fish oil include herring, albacore tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines and anchovies. And if you don't have the time (or palate) to fit fish into your regular diet, you can always get the benefits of fish oil from a regular supplement. Ask your chiropractor about the benefits of fish oil, particularly if you suffer from asthma.

* Congrats to WHP Team Member Geoff Bastow

A big congrats to Geoff Bastow for finishing 44th out of 3326 and 6th in his age group at the Las Vegas Marathon. The coolest thing of it all is that he did a 17:36 last 5K which is a PR for him for a 5K! This shows that he has the endurance AND the speed. I am however a little disappointed that he didn't get 41st overall, which is his age J
